Guildford is an old town on a hill, and almost nothing in it is square. The Victorian and Edwardian villas around Charlotteville and the streets climbing the Mount have solid walls that bow, floors that fall away toward the back of the house, and ceilings that change height where a scullery was absorbed decades ago. Drop a run of factory units into one of those without checking anything and you get exactly what people complain about: doors that will not line up, a worktop with a visible taper along the wall, and a two-centimetre gap behind the tall units. The fix is unglamorous and it happens before a single carcass is opened — laser the floor and the walls, find the high point, set the run from there, and scribe the end panels to the wall rather than trusting the wall to be straight. Onslow Village and the Arts and Crafts stock bring their own constraint: original detailing worth keeping, and rooms that reward a kitchen designed around them instead of one that fights them. Out through Merrow and Burpham the houses get bigger and the job usually changes shape — a knock-through into the dining room or a rear extension, which means a calculated steel, building control sign-off, and services moved properly rather than extended with a length of hose. That is also where islands come in, and an island is where most kitchens go wrong: it needs power and often water and waste running under a solid floor, so it has to be decided at the very start, not when the units arrive. On worktops we will give you a straight answer about where money is worth spending. Quartz and composite are templated after the units are fixed, never before, and the joins go where the eye does not travel rather than where they are easy to cut. Solid timber wants sealing properly and it will move — beautiful, but not next to a dishwasher unless you are prepared to look after it. Laminate has got genuinely good and in plenty of kitchens it is the right call. We do the plumbing and electrics in-house, which is the real reason our jobs run to the days we quote: nothing stalls for a week waiting on somebody else to appear between stages. Everything is tested and certified, the old kitchen is stripped out and taken away in the price, and the whole thing is guaranteed in writing.
